Procrasti-Nation

As you all are probably aware, I have not posted in a while. I have been busy but not so busy that I couldn’t post. I guess what I’m saying is, “Hi, my name is Kelli and I am a procrastinator”.

Do you put things off until the last minute no matter how simple the task? Do you actually have more free time that you are willing to admit? Has your motto become “I’ll do it later”? Then I have just the place for you, (drum roll) the Procrasti-Nation, where “procrastinators unite…tomorrow”! (Source: David Hooker’s T-shirt)

Sounds like a laid back place right? Well let me tell you the about the seedy underground of the Procrasti-Nation. For one thing, some people do not even realize they are citizens of the Procrasti-Nation. In my case, I visited once in a while but I kept pushing things off and it all piled up until it fell on top of me and “BOOM!”, just like that I was a citizen of the Procrasti-Nation. No passport, no visa, just there drowning in the sands of time and sinking farther all the time. A terrible side effect of staying too long in the Procrasti-Nation is laziness. I am sure that some people think laziness leads to procrastination but I think it goes both ways. When I procrastinate, the things I need to do or even things I want to do seem so far away that I often stop pursuing them all together or wait until it is absolutely necessary to approach them. If I am not doing what I want to and definitely not doing what I need to, then what am I doing? Nothing, I am doing absolutely nothing (nothing productive anyway).

Well, I looked around and realized I was not in Kansas anymore (Wizard of Oz reference) but I could not get out of the Procrasti-Nation even though I wanted to. So, whom could I ask for help? That’s right, Ghostbusters. Just kidding, God was the one I asked for an escape rope. Of course I prayed about it and I got results. Not only did I start on this post (which I should have weeks ago) but I also washed my clothes that were piling up. After I wrote about half of post, I went back to church at sunset for the business meeting, and got home around 10:30pm. I planned to wash clothes today but after getting home so late I figured I would do it tomorrow morning but I made a conscious decision to be active about not procrastinating and went ahead and washed clothes (they’re in the dryer as I type) and guess what, I did not die from it. In fact, I did not suffer at all and it is one less thing I will have to do tomorrow (awesome!).

did not want to leave the Procrastination for my physical health but for my spiritual health as well. You see, while the word “procrastination” is not in the Bible (not KJV at least), the Bible does have plenty to say about laziness which, as I mentioned before, can be either a cause or effect of procrastination. Proverbs 13:4 (NIV) reads, “A sluggard’s appetite is never filled, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied”. I think that one is self-explanatory. Another simple one is Proverbs 15:19 (NIV), “The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns, but the path of the upright is a highway”. My lazy self will have a rough time navigating life but if I get my act together, it will be much easier.

I am going to make more of an effort not to visit the Procrasti-Nation and if I do visit I will try my best to ensure that it is only a pit stop and not a relocation. Sure it will be difficult to change but I would only continue doing myself a disservice if I did not. I hope others will join me in migrating from the Procrasti-Nation!
